Knowledge Transfer Activity: Benchmarks for the purchase of work shoes for outdoor winter conditions Abstract Following a request from the City of Montréal and other partners in APSAM’s police liaison group, an initial exploratory study was carried out by a team from the IRSST, École Polytechnique and McGill University to document the problem of slipping among police officers and school crossing guards (0099-8760).The research activity highlighted a set of determinants for slipperiness and, in particular, the equipment (boots) and environmental conditions (icy surfaces outdoors) as significant risk factors in the mechanisms that involve a loss of friction and falls. The objective of this knowledge transfer activity is to develop an information sheet that could assist the purchasing process by increasing the level of knowledge about the performance of shoes in terms of slip resistance.
