1981-1990: The IRSST, the first OHS research centre in Canada – The challenges faced

The early years were devoted mainly to setting up infrastructures and introducing operational procedures for the IRSST’s various programs. The Institute therefore organized laboratory, analytical and support services to meet the needs of the OHS professionals and practitioners of the CNESST and of researchers.

At the same time, research teams were formed and research projects initiated. The Institute made significant breakthroughs in research on back problems, repetitive strain injuries and air quality in office buildings. The work done by engineering and ergonomics researchers allowed the IRSST to focus its attention and efforts on safety-related research. High priority was placed on achieving visibility for the Institute, communication, and the dissemination and transfer of research results.
