Micro-Organism Exposure and Risk Assessment – Waste Collection Handlers and Drivers

Abstract

Waste handling has been linked to health problems such as asthma and toxic dust syndrome. Exposure to microbial particles may be suffered not only by the workers who directly handle garbage, recyclables and compost (garbage collectors), but also by others in the industry, including truck drivers. Although drivers do not handle the material directly, microbial particles may be transferred into the truck cab.

This study assesses the micro-organism exposure and risk of waste collection workers and drivers. Using laboratory test results, we will describe the factors that contribute to the deterioration of the filters that can influence worker exposure.
