Identification of Situations of Skin Exposure to Pesticides and Emergence of Preventive Practices: Combining Activity Analysis with Exposure Measurement – the Case of Apple Producers

Abstract

Apple producers are exposed to pesticides while handling these products or executing other tasks. However, there is no consensus regarding the effectiveness of proposed protective measures.

This study was designed to analyze situations in which apple producers’ skin is exposed to pesticides in their working environment and the related preventive practices. These practices, which apple producers have developed based on their tasks, specific working situations and context, are not widely known. The data collected by the researchers can be used to set up a database that will be useful for training, one of the steps in designing preventive measures that are suitable for agricultural tasks.

Finally, the methodology developed could be adapted to measure skin exposure in other sectors in which workers may be exposed to chemical or biological risks.
