Abstract

Integration and training of trades workers are key issues of concern to aerospace companies coping with aging staff combined with recurring sick leaves.

Aerospace workers are affected by musculoskeletal disorders, particularly in the upper limbs, in greater proportions than the general labour force. Moreover, temporary layoffs and massive hirings in the industry create integration and training challenges.

A recent study on turnover, carried out in a large aerospace company, showed that the short training period offered to new assemblers does not optimally prepare them to handle the production constraints within which they then have to operate.

The purpose of this project is to better document the links between the training received by trades workers and problems experienced on the job, including OHS issues. The researchers will use previously collected but partially untapped data, as well as complementary data. They will develop a representative overview of workplace training issues for trades workers in the aerospace industry. The overview will help define common challenges and needs as well as those specified. Practical recommendations and research opportunities will be proposed.
