Comparative analysis of machine accidents in the maintenance and production phase Abstract Accidents involving machinery are still fairly common in Québec. Prevention requires an understanding of what causes them and when they occur. However, data currently available in Québec fails to differentiate accidents that occur during production from those that occur during machinery maintenance. A number of studies show that accidents during maintenance have very different and much more serious physical and human consequences than production-related accidents. The purpose of this research is to survey workers in different industries who have suffered a “machinery accident” and collect the data needed to analyze and classify such accidents into “maintenance” or “production” accidents. It will then be possible to characterize the differences between maintenance and production “machinery accidents,” identify risk factors associated with maintenance work and factors impacting the related risk.
