Awareness document on reducing the risks related to exposure to carcinogens Abstract Cancer is the leading cause of death in industrialized countries, and an estimated two to eight per cent of the cases result from exposure to work-related carcinogenic substances. Although carcinogens are present in many work environments, a degree of complacency has developed around them, as their effects occur only several years after initial exposure. And yet, work-related cancers could be avoided by reducing workers’ exposure to the number and concentration of carcinogens in the workplace. An awareness document was produced in order to take stock of the issue of work-related cancers. RG-790 describes a process for identifying the carcinogens present in work environments, assessing the risks, and implementing appropriate prevention measures. The document is also cataloguing the resources available for undertaking this process in the specific context of Québec.A shorter version of this document was produced for workers.
