Workplace practices to ensure a safe and sustainable return to work of workers who have had a musculoskeletal disorder

Abstract

The rehabilitation and return to work of workers who have suffered a musculoskeletal disorder or occupational disease are major challenges for companies, workers, the healthcare system and society. Although rehabilitation intervention principles are well documented, practices for applying them in the workplace are not.

The research team intends to describe company practices for the return to work of workers who have suffered an MSD, assess the nature of potential divergences from recommended best practices, and evaluate the feasibility of incorporating effective strategic elements into these practices.

The researchers will begin with a survey of knowledge on company best practices to determine the strategic elements applicable to the Quebec context. They will then document return-to-work practices used in five companies. Discussion groups will also be organized in each company to assess the feasibility of adopting best practices and improvement solutions on a day-to-day basis.

The findings should better equip companies to support workers returning to work, specifically through case descriptions and proposed improvements, examples of best practices and sustainable return-to-work strategies.
