Management of the risks associated with hazardous materials storage and transportation

Abstract

Industrial activity requires the manufacture and use of hazardous materials (HMs), but also their transportation between static facilities. Several factors increase the risks related to the transportation and use of these materials.
This project will consist of two parts. The first involves the analysis of the companies' logistic strategies and an investigation to evaluate the safety measures implemented (safety perimeters around hazardous zones, compliance with laws and regulations, maintenance of the fleet of vehicles, safety audits in the case of subcontracting, and the training offered). The second part will consist of an economic analysis of the sectors using or transporting HMs. Sectoral fact sheets containing information on the HMs used and the risk management problems will be produced. The new information that will emerge from this project will make it possible to identify the factors likely to reduce the risks related to the transportation and use of HMs, as well as the risk management tools and guides available by sector. Furthermore, this knowledge can contribute to the prevention strategies of the CSST and joint sector-based associations.
