Conditions for work performance and OHS: results of an interregional investigation on youth in high school and college

Abstract

In Québec, young people are entering the labour market increasingly early. However, among all the research on young people and OHS, few studies have addressed workers from 15 to 19 years of age, whose participation rate has increased in three decades from 43.7% to almost 52%. In 2008, the Centre collégial de transfert de technologie en pratiques sociales novatrices (CCTT-PSN, college centre for the transfer of technology in innovative social practices) ÉCOBES, at the Cégep de Jonquière, carried out an interregional survey with the students in high school and college in the National Capital, Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean and Laurentians regions on the type of job held, the number of hours worked, the characteristics of the organizational environment, and OHS training.

This study will benefit from the wealth of information originating from the 2008 interregional survey in order to produce a profile of the first jobs held by young people and the organizational and physical constraints that they see there. The relationship between working conditions, educational success and various health and safety indicators will be documented. The results can be used for furthering the safe integration of new workers, while promoting persistence in school, an asset in occupational injury prevention.
