Occupational health and safety risks, recommendations for preventive strategies for involved workers and companies in the wind energy sector Abstract The wind energy sector is an emerging industry in Québec. It is estimated that in 2014, more than 1,000 people will work full time in the operation and maintenance of Québec wind farms, and another 2000 will occasionally be involved. Work at heights, in confined spaces, isolation, the absence of nearby emergency assistance, the physical requirements to climb towers, work at very low temperatures, and electrocution risks are many of the occupational health and safety challenges in this activity sector.This project will analyze the accidents and critical incidents that have occurred in this sector, the methods, and the action plans existing on wind farms located in Québec and elsewhere in the world. The researchers will create a scientific database on the typical risks to which this sector’s workers are exposed. Particular attention will be paid to lockout, isolation, and to Québec’s specific climate characteristics.
