Strategies favourable to the development and maintenance of occupational health measures in small companies in Montréal's urban centre hiring immigrant labour

Abstract

Few studies address the issue of the occupational health and safety (OHS) of immigrant labour employed in small companies in urban centres. However, it is known that these establishments have a high prevalence of serious and sometimes fatal occupational injuries. An occupational health intervention team made the same observation as the observations in a multiethnic centre in Montréal; the management of preventive or corrective measures in OHS is absent or neglected. The aim of this prospective study is to understand the difficulties related to this situation in order to develop strategies for overcoming them and for preventing accidents in small companies with significant immigrant manpower. The researchers also have the objective of transferring the knowledge thus acquired to the stakeholders as well as to the employers and workers in these companies.
