Role of moulds in tight-building syndrome Abstract Although moulds are one of the many causes of tight-building syndrome, their precise role is poorly understood and they are difficult to detect. This study identified parameters which control the presence of mould in ventilation systems, took mould samples from actual workplaces, identified moulds in the laboratory, and extracted mould toxins. A rapid qualitative detection method was developed for moulds and mycotoxins. The study's finding that propionic acid is fungicidal suggests that this product may prove useful in eliminating moulds from ventilation systems in office buildings.
