Novel approach for making young workers aware of their working, employment and OHS conditions

Abstract

In the wake of Opération JeuneSST, which the IRSST undertook in 2004 to investigate the specific issue of workers under 25 years of age, this exploratory study examined the actions of a group working in the field with this population. The practitioners from Les Toiles des jeunes travailleurs network deal with young employees in small companies directly to make them aware of, to train them and equip them mainly regarding occupational health and safety (OHS), as well as to encourage them to cooperate with their employer to improve their working conditions. By presenting this approach, this report documents several facets of the young people’s working conditions and OHS, and shows that community intervention can help improve these aspects. It also highlights the necessity of pursuing youth awareness-raising processes and the interest in exploring new ways of taking action in this regard.
