Survey on solvent comparison tools

Abstract

Every day, many workers are exposed to various toxic or flammable solvents. Substitution, which consists of replacing undesirable solvents with less dangerous products or processes, is the means of prevention of choice. Comparison of replacement solvents is a crucial and complex step in the substitution process. The authors of this report surveyed the available methods and software used to compare solvents by taking into account health, safety, environmental and technical aspects of a substitution project. Thirteen tools have been described and discussed, as well as several other auxiliary tools used for estimating missing physicochemical, environmental or toxicological data.
The solvent comparison tools vary somewhat in their general complexity, their approach to the possibility of considering mixtures of solvents, the importance given to regulations, consideration of the process, their user-friendliness and their availability. Some tools emphasize aspects considered more important depending on the situation. A few propose commercial or generic replacement solutions directly. Some tools’ main objective is worker protection; for others, it is environmental protection. Some tools are reserved for specific processes, while others are generic. Finally, no surveyed tool meets all the industrial hygienist’s needs, but their combination may prove beneficial.
