Evaluation of bioaerosol exposure and effects on the respiratory and skin health of workers exposed to metal cutting fluids Abstract We are currently witnessing a re-emergence of cases of extrinsic allergic alveolitis in machinists who use cutting fluids (CF). Although European and American studies seem to address the presence of bacteria in these fluids, no study describes the situation prevailing in Canada. After having completed their preliminary work, the scientists will now attempt to pinpoint more precisely the problem relating to the presence of microbial flora in CF. They will focus on the microbial ecology of these fluids and the bioaerosols that they generate, will evaluate the health status of workers exposed to them, and will then attempt to find means that are likely to help control contamination. The knowledge resulting from this activity will help in formulating recommendations for improving the health of metal industry workers who come in contact with CF aerosols.
