Follow-up of two interventions undertaken to prevent musculoskeletal injuries to the upper limbs in the workplace

Abstract

It is generally recognized that interventions to prevent and reduce musculoskeletal disorders (MSD) recommend a reduction in exposure to physical stresses and in the level of stress. Even though these strategies are often adopted, few studies have as yet evaluated their effects, due to a lack of measurement methods and appropriate protocols. This publication describes a study carried out with visual language interpreters, using an experimental protocol and exposure measurement methods that can be used in the workplace, in order to help make up for this deficiency. It provides detailed information on the effect of such interventions on exposure to physical constraints, on the perception of stress and pain, as well as on the feasibility and effectiveness of this type of protocol in an occupational context. It also describes measuring methods for risk factor exposure applicable in the field, thus helping to refine the approaches for evaluating ergonomic interventions in the workplace.
