Kinematic study of various methods of manipulating computer mice

Abstract

Currently, most of the software installed on workstations has made the computer mouse an essential tool. Several studies seem to demonstrate a relationship between the appearance of musculoskeletal disorders in the user and awkward postures and static muscle contractions during the manipulation of the mouse. Recently, the use of the computer mouse with the left hand was recommended to reduce the amplitude of the movements and postural stresses related to it. The aim of the present study was therefore to measure the advantages and disadvantages of manipulating the mouse with the left hand, as compared to the standard use of the mouse with the right hand. The researchers do a comparative analysis of the upper limb posture of 27 participants during its manipulation. Their results demonstrate that there is effectively an advantage to using the computer mouse with the left hand, and propose complementary avenues of research to establish with certainty that this reduction of stresses is sufficient to reduce the musculoskeletal disorders associated with the use of the computer mouse.
