Production organisation and sawmill accidents:
a comparative study of companies and production phases

Abstract

This comparative study examines the effect of different types of production organisation on the frequency, severity and characteristics of accidents. Its specific objectives were the identification of woodworking companies and production phases associated with the highest accident frequencies, characterisation of the most representative accident scenarios in this sector, and formulation of recommendations leading to the development and implementation of preventive strategies and measures related to work and production organisation.

The results indicate that safety is reduced when the worker/machine ratio exceeds a threshold value. This may occur if a large workforce is necessary for the proper operation of processes or equipment, or if the workforce is insufficient to maintain a given level of production.

The research report includes a series of recommendations designed to prevent sawmill accidents.
