Professional dance in Québec: nature, frequency, gravity, and prevention of injuries Abstract Occupational health and safety hazards in professional dance are very poorly understood, both in Québec and elsewhere. An interview survey was performed among 80 dancers, representatives of dance troupe management, and health professionals who regularly treat dancers.Professional dancers are at high risk for accidents, particularly overuse injuries caused by demanding training. The most important predictive factors are accumulated fatigue, performance pressure, and floor texture. Prevention, compensation, and treatment of injuries are all inadequate.Management of prevention activities should occupy a higher profile in both the dance troupes and the CSST (Commission de la santé et de la sécurité du travail du Québec, Québec Occupational Health and Safety Commission). The Regroupement des professionnels de la danse du Québec (Québec Professional Dancers' Coalition) has committed itself to establishing training and information programs, and to promoting the establishment of local health and safety committees.
