Preparation of a design guide of lock-out devices for hazardous machines

Abstract

The professionals called on to participate in the design and installation of protective devices on hazardous machines have only a few documents in French at their disposal; these are often poorly adapted to Québec companies. To compensate for this deficiency, a team has developed a guide that will be useful to engineers and firms that design, modify or implement control systems for the machines used in Québec according to the categories in ISO 13849-1:1999. The overall risk assessment and reduction process according to ISO 12100 is presented. This is followed by eight examples of applications of protective devices, grouped into four categories. Each example includes a photograph of the machine, a description of its operation, the operation involved and its application, the risk considered, a drawing or photograph of the protective device, the factors considered in selecting the circuit’s category, the electrical diagram of the proposed control circuit, and comments on the assembly.
