Visual problems in the workplace Abstract Occupational visual problems are prevalent in workers, and an information gap exists in this area. This action-oriented research consisted of a critical analysis of reference documents (scientific literature, standards, regulations, etc.), and an examination of occupationally induced visual stress in a variety of workplaces. Two guidebooks were produced. The first, dealing with eye protection, identifies hazardous workplaces and presents an eye protection programme. The second is concerned with visual tasks, and describes environmental and operational visual stress factors, and their effects on workers using visual display terminals. The guidebooks were distributed in universities and in workplaces, where they were integrated into training sessions. Visual stress in approximately 10 companies was evaluated by a group of experts.
