Control of Garbage Collectors' Exposure to Bioaerosols

Abstract

This fact sheet, which presents the highlights of an IRSST study on domestic-waste collectors’ exposure to bioaerosols, is intended for workers in the domestic-waste collection sector. Waste collection has become more complex over the past years, making it appropriate to evaluate the risks involved and, above all, modify protective and preventive measures. The IRSST has been concerned with the health and safety of these workers for several years. This fact sheet focuses on exposure to bioaerosols in particular. It provides an overview of the issue, and includes statistics, definitions and background information, as well as information on the context and methodology of the study. The results show that certain types of waste collection result in exposure to bioaerosols at levels much higher than reference values. A series of industrial hygiene and preventive measures are suggested in order to reduce exposure and related effects such as lung problems, skin problems, and the gastrointestinal problems often caused by the collection of biodegradable domestic waste. This publication is available for free on the IRSST and the Association paritaire du secteur Affaires municipales (APSAM) websites. Printed versions are also available from the APSAM.
