Development of an analytical checklist for the evaluation by workers of health and safety hazards in the Garment and Metal Products Fabrication sectors

Abstract

Small companies (no more than 50 employees) are most responsible for job growth, especially in Québec, but are generally ill-equipped, in terms of both material and human resources, to improve health and safety conditions in their workplaces. To remedy this situation, some European countries have adopted a worker-based approach to hazard evaluation integrated into the company's production operations. The key to this approach is the use of analytical checklists for all aspects of prevention, from hazard identification to the implementation and follow-up of preventive measures. The decision to adopt the approach is voluntary, and companies adopting it are free to implement it as they see fit. This project will review the various approaches to worker-based hazard evaluation checklists, and identify the best model. This will be followed by the development, in collaboration with workplace and prevention-network stakeholders, of two checklists, one for the Garment sector and one for the Metal Products Fabrication sector. The checklists will be validated in the field.
