Occupational prognosis of workers suffering from back injury Abstract More than 80% of the costs associated with back pain in workers are attributed to a minority of cases requiring a work interruption of more than six months. Over a period of two years, the authors followed some 1,000 workers suffering from back pain, in order to better understand the functional consequences of spinal disorders and to analyze the relative importance of the determinants of a return to work in good health. This work also allowed a simple predictive tool to be constructed and validated that makes it easier to identify people who have a high risk of prolonged absenteeism so that they can be rapidly offered the appropriate interventions and so that the resources devoted to spinal disorders can be more effectively used.
